I found a pink card in my room today
and remembered an emotionless sky from a dead time
metal grate in the floor, home to spiders
and juvenile eyes peering out to the kitchen below
a basement room I shall never step inside again
dusty, covered in webs, filled with old coats
that had long since lost hope of the sun’s warm embrace
greeting them once more
constantly knitting the same two stitches over and over again
fluffy yarn seemingly wasted for a stuffed poodle’s leash
waiting for second cousins to arrive
and lock me in a toy chest to sleep forevermore
among the dead and dying
a week taken off from school
a red jeweled spider pin in my hand
my fingers curl around an old pen salvaged from the past
my great-granddaughter, I do not even remember you
these rivers and ravines in my face- the world has forgotten them
it is your duty to make sure
that the world does not forget yours
with this pen, I shall write my destiny
with this pen, I shall carve out my own heart
always remember this
always remember this
always
