how many wasted hours
how many ivory towers
have we fallen from in our hubris?
how many arguments
and ash-turned bridges
that we would now deem ludicrous?

let's talk about something I care about.
let's talk about Sapphos
and the lesbians.
and the soft hours
in the wee of the night
where I lay my head against your chest
your heartbeat in my ears
as children where to sleep not on one's back
meant forever running from monsters whose footsteps
boomed louder than the thunder outside

something in me says that this insanity is forever
the product of awareness, of feeling
something outside the confines of societal standards

and as I sit here in my chair
and crunch crackers between my fingers
my heart pounds in my chest
you must be doing something
something
something
anything

are the places you once thought safe,
really safe?
or are they only safe for a certain disposition,
one that would simultaneously respect and deny my humanity
fulfilling the whole "duality of mankind" business
in a far more brutal way than I ever would have imagined
beyond the mask

Lucine,
most willful of the three imps,
I can feel you in the way the walls speak
when the temperature plunges and you wrap us in blankets
and in the way you travel down my spine after I've showered
soft fingertips lingering over every bone in my back
always on the countdown to my next mental breakdown

you and I sit here in our ivory towers
and contemplate our own existences.
are we two shards of the same soul,
separated at birth and led drastically different lives?
do you dream of me, of my mundane life,
like I dream of you?

how disappointed of me you must be.
or maybe you look forward to our meeting,
where I take on a danger far greater than myself
and you relish in the mundane and the obscure.

do you love me too?
