it’s good that you keep me asleep
unknowing, unaware of the outside world
you hold me in your lap
resting between your crossed legs
gentle domination of a newborn deity

a familiar heft like a bowling ball
you perch me on your little braided metal pedestal
and admire the gleaming gold surface
slightly translucent, warm to the touch
a mirror of true selves

how scandalous!

you remember the night spent out on the town
watching the headlines scroll up on the wall-screen

you remember the lady with hairless face and impeccable skin
eyes too close together, cackling at the camera
“Do I seem crazy to you?” she laughs, moments before the drills settle in
surgical precision, scraping away millimeters off her skull
Barbie in a beauty shop
until her head caves in and collapses into dust

your spine shivers, as if disintegrating in solidarity
you never wanted your love to go through that
better fed than dead!

but you don’t feed godlings.
they’re like plants, silly.
you keep them in pots and water them
and hope that they don’t overtake your counter

I could leave this library at any time, if I wanted to
and yet I stay at your side
despite this form, cursed or blessed, up to interpretation
this space is as much mine as it is yours
