I can still remember
that first sleepover
when I cuddled up next to you
and wished that you knew the truth

I was so gol dang
smitten with you
and everything about you
from the way you smiled
to the way you walked
and how you whispered my name
and those dreadful three words

and I still remember that day in my room
when I had you in my arms
and we were going to be a couple
we were going to be forever
and that night was supposed to be the first
of many long nights we would share together
and our breaths were in sync
just like we thought everything was

it was us against the world
us against anything that said that we couldn’t be together
but it ended up being us against each other

do you ever think of me
do you remember how safe you felt in my arms
do you ever wish that things could have been different
or are you still happy sleeping alone
