entities of days long past

published: 10-17-2015

lawn mowers bringing their judgement upon the unruly grasses of the lawn outside
the one baseball game of the week drawing out in the evening
a group of naïve and untouched children screaming somewhere at the park
the faint blowing sound that precedes a gasp of relief inside
the slosh of the neighbor’s pool finally being put to use after three years

female adolescent chatter about the plant of the season being pervasive
“spoopyness” and eagerness over a month signifying a whole single night
crackdowns in school and people complaining about the heavy workload
the yell of the voices of children asking for a whole three days worth of stomachaches

declarations of a joyful three months
the tingle of the walls that signify that the heater is working
a silent drop of a single unhinged ornament in the wee hours of midnight
the warm feeling of being loved and being together, if even for a moment
a vague uneasy feeling in the pit of stomachs over the reapings of this year
the family’s anguish of learning that a beloved family member does not share their faith
some stomachs growling over the anticipated dinner that their grandmother made

little kids screaming yet again over the thawing ground
the silent dripping of snowman blood into the storm gutter
the wastes of two seasons ago being found at last in a muted crinkle
everything previously thought dead and never to return blooming once again
and the vague feeling that this may be a fresh start for you as well

mere entities of days long past
each with their opportunity to haunt the earth once again
