I ran a surprise mile today
and the midnight hands leaned in close and cupped my ear
and whispered a command I’d thought I’d never hear

I said hello to pain today
a friendly reminder from my internal organs
that no matter how much my brain may throw a fit about it
and then self-alienate
that I am still unfortunately fertile

the rouge and crimson stain my hands
cake under my fingernails
little scarlet moons
whispering conflicting tales of freedom or immortality
