gentle domination of a newborn deity</p>

<p>a familiar heft like a bowling ball<br />
|
||
you perch me on your little braided metal pedestal<br />
|
||
and admire the gleaming gold surface<br />
|
||
slightly translucent, warm to the touch<br />
|
||
a mirror of true selves</p>
|
||
|
||
<p>how scandalous!</p>
|
||
|
||
<p>you remember the night spent out on the town<br />
|
||
watching the headlines scroll up on the wall-screen</p>
|
||
|
||
<p>you remember the lady with hairless face and impeccable skin<br />
|
||
eyes too close together, cackling at the camera<br />
|
||
“Do I seem crazy to you?” she laughs, moments before the drills settle in<br />
|
||
surgical precision, scraping away millimeters off her skull<br />
|
||
Barbie in a beauty shop<br />
|
||
until her head caves in and collapses into dust</p>
|
||
|
||
<p>your spine shivers, as if disintegrating in solidarity<br />
|
||
you never wanted your love to go through that<br />
|
||
better fed than dead!</p>
|
||
|
||
<p>but you don’t feed godlings.<br />
|
||
they’re like plants, silly.<br />
|
||
you keep them in pots and water them<br />
|
||
and hope that they don’t overtake your counter</p>
|
||
|
||
<p>I could leave this library at any time, if I wanted to<br />
|
||
and yet I stay at your side<br />
|
||
despite this form, cursed or blessed, up to interpretation<br />
|
||
this space is as much mine as it is yours</p>
